Business Consulting – Administration/Copywriting/Outsourcing

Brisbane with clients nationally
How long have been in business?
18 months
Is it a full-time or part-time business?
Full time
Did you start your business before or after becoming a mum/step mum?
After
Why did you start your business?
I needed the flexibility to be able to look after the children and actively participate in their lives; to be able to schedule my work life around my two most important people!
What has been your biggest triumph in business?
Being able to run a successful business whilst increasing my ability to be there for the boys. Previously I always had to have the boys in after-school care or get family members to travel down from the coast to look after the children so I could earn an income. I have successfully created a niche business that has increased my income from my previous employment, with the added advantage of being able to be there for my boys. The whole six weeks of Christmas holidays I was able to work from home and be with the boys. It’s all about striking that balance!
What was your biggest mistake in business?
Trying to develop and grow too fast and sorting the time management for different clients. There is a need to realise the level of your work hours and how you are going to get the work completed, matched with time organisation.
What is the one piece of advice you wish you’d been given about running a business with children when you started out?
Be incredibly time specific as to tasks, whether that be family or business oriented. You need to have your week planned and stick to that plan. Also make sure you give yourself “me” time.
Name your top three business successes
1. The development of the Business Basics Training Program that is being implemented with other industries as a mentoring program to support new business.
2. I am currently developing the Reciprocal Newsletter Program for small business. This is a free program that Administration Results is offering to help increase the exposure of other small business. We have had more than 40 businesses wanting to participate in the program so far.
3. The overall achievement is that I have created a product that is needed and has been responded to very positively by other small business owners and I was able to do this as a single parent. I am very proud of my achievements.
What are you passionate about?
I am very passionate about my new man in my life…but that’s a whole other story!
This year I am really passionate and focussed on getting the health/life/work balance right. After having undergone cancer treatment for skin cancer in October 2010, I know its time to also be successful at “me” time. I am passionate and very excited about the new programs we have running this year and developing our business and increasing the level of our clientele.
What’s the one thing you can never resist?
I can never resist a good block of chocolate and the occasional relaxed chick flick. Love it!
Who inspires you?
Sometimes I inspire myself. Some of the dramas that I have been through in the past five years with divorce, new partners and health issues makes me think to myself if I can come out smiling right now, you are doing yourself proud! It’s important to say to yourself you are doing a great job being a parent and earning an income.
A close friend of mine also inspires me. She has been through numerous cancer scares, marriages, divorces and she is always smiling and runs an extremely successful life coaching business. Sometimes I don’t know how she finds the energy.
What is the song that gets you fired up?
Don’t really have one
What is your favourite quote?
“Good people are found, not changed.” ~ Excerpts from The Treasury Of Quotes by Jim Rohn
Recently I read a headline that said, “We don’t teach our people to be nice. We simply hire nice people.” Wow! What a clever short cut.
