The past 24 hours has been a whirlwind of cooking after Harvey discovered a white plum tree full of riper than ripe fruit yesterday.
Between them, he and Noah picked two 20L buckets, plus Noah’s wagon full of ripe plums. He got right to the top of the tree with the help of our neighbour’s ladder (Harvey paid them with a bag of plums – what else?).
These plums were so ripe we knew we had to do something straight away, so Harvey started taking out the stones and I headed to the supermarket to get supplies (I bought all six preserving jars they had). When I got back I made two batches of plum jam and prepped another one for this morning (it was midnight by then and I’d had enough of plums).
I started again this morning cooking the third batch of jam and then moved on to plum upside down cake, plum sauce, spicy plum relish, plum and cinnamon compote, plum pie and plum turnovers.
There was just enough plums left over to freeze some of the mushy pulp for when we’ve eaten our way through all these plum products.
Our haul resulted in 16 jars of jam, one cake, six bottles of sauce, two jars of relish, three jars of compote, one pie and four turnovers. Lucky we got a second freezer and plenty of storage space!
